Extensive Definition

Oxacillin sodium (trade name Bactocill) is a narrow spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is resistant to penicillinases, such as that produced by Staphylococcus aureus. However, resistant strains are now emerging that are called oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA). It is widely used clinically in the US, but in the UK is only used for laboratory identification of resistant organisms. including MRSA and Streptococcus pneumoniae).
